  • Donor organization: UNDP
  • Geographical location: Osh, Jalalabad & Batken oblasts
The project aims to examine the linkages between climate change, gender issues, and peace, with a focus on irrigation water management challenges in the Ferghana Valley. It seeks to strengthen the capacity of local communities to prevent and reduce conflicts arising from climate change impacts and water scarcity.

Project Background

The project focuses on how climate change affects irrigation water use, social relations, and levels of conflict. Special attention is given to the role of women and their participation in local governance, decision-making, and the peaceful resolution of climate-related challenges.

The project strategy aims to reduce conflicts in the water sector and strengthen community resilience through enhanced cooperation, improved water resource management, and strengthened women’s leadership at both local and institutional levels. Project activities are aligned with UN Security Council Resolution 1325 and promote more active and meaningful participation of women in peacebuilding and climate adaptation processes.

Within the framework of the project, practical approaches will be developed in the target areas, which can later be applied in other parts of the Ferghana Valley.

Project Objectives & Goals

The main objective is to conduct an analysis of the “climate change – peacebuilding – gender” nexus, with a focus on effective irrigation management and climate-sensitive, gender-responsive capacity-building interventions in pilot Aiyl Okmotu (AOs).

Project Result

The results of the analysis should serve as a basis for developing practical recommendations for local water management authorities and be used for the subsequent integration of peacebuilding, climate-resilient, and gender-sensitive approaches into planning and decision-making processes at the Aiyl Okmotu level.
