The summer school “GROW — Agrobiodiversity in a Changing Climate” is held annually and supported by the Secretariat of the Mountain Partnership, Sapienza University (Rome, Italy), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and other partners.
The program aims to train specialists who can apply knowledge and methods to conserve agrobiodiversity and help agriculture better adapt to climate change.
Agrobiodiversity refers to all the variety of plants and animals used in agriculture to provide food.
In 2025, the school took place in Rome, Italy, with 22 young specialists from 13 countries participating. Kyrgyzstan was represented by Maksat Miinazarov, Project Coordinator of СAMР Alatoo PF. The course included lectures, practical sessions, discussions, and field studies. Participants studied topics such as biodiversity conservation, sustainable land management, and building value chains for environmentally friendly products. Special attention was given to mountainous regions, where farmers maintain rare plant varieties and animal breeds, but face increasing challenges due to climate change and economic difficulties.
Participation in the summer school helped CAMP Alatoo PF specialists improve their skills in sustainable natural resource management when working with rural communities in Kyrgyzstan. This is important because conserving agrobiodiversity ensures food security, facilitates adaptation to climate change, and promotes sustainable agricultural development. The knowledge gained will be applied to enhance current and future foundation projects, including pasture assessment, ecosystem strengthening, and support for rural communities. Moreover, participating in the GROW program contributes to the creation of an international network of specialists, researchers, and practitioners, enhancing the exchange of experience and knowledge.
At the conclusion of the program, all participants received certificates of attendance and successful completion of the course.
