Results Finalized for Project Identifying Reforestation and Afforestation Sites in Kyrgyzstan

24 August 2026

On August 25, 2026, Bishkek hosted the final event highlighting the results of the project "Identification of Suitable Sites for Afforestation, Reforestation, and Restoration of Degraded Forests on State Forest Land in the Kyrgyz Republic."

The project was implemented by the  CAMP Alatoo" under the leadership of the Forest Service under the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic, with support from the regional program "Climate-Sensitive Integrated Land Management in Central Asia," implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German Government.

The primary objective of the project was to develop a methodology for identifying sites suitable for reforestation and afforestation across 26 forestry enterprises in Kyrgyzstan.

Key deliverables developed under the project include:

  • A methodology for identifying potential sites within the forest plantation fund

  • Maps of suitable sites for reforestation and afforestation

  • Soil maps for 26 forestry enterprises

  • Structured vector data for further analysis and planning

  • An analysis of the regulatory framework along with proposals for institutionalizing the methodology

During the final round table, participants were presented with mapping results, soil maps and datasets, soil assessment approaches for afforestation, and the findings of the legal analysis.

"Such data provides the necessary foundation for attracting climate investments and implementing projects aimed at restoring and developing forest ecosystems in Kyrgyzstan," noted Marat Asanaliev, Deputy Country Director of the "Climate-Sensitive Integrated Land Management in Central Asia" program (GIZ).

All developed materials will be handed over to the Forest Service under the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kyrgyz Republic for further use in forest resource planning and management.

The event brought together representatives of state authorities, experts, and project partners, serving as a platform to discuss next steps in forest management, reforestation, and climate change adaptation for Kyrgyzstan's forest sector.
