Nurkyz Sarnogoeva, Energy Efficiency Projects Specialist at the CAMP Alatoo PF, has been selected as one of 32 experts from Central Asia to participate in the "Empowering Central Asian Women in Renewable Energy" programme. This initiative is a mentorship collaboration between the OSCE and the Global Women’s Network for the Energy Transition (GWNET).
From April 6 to 10, 2026, Austria is hosting a key stage of the programme: a study tour where participants engage in global forums and discussions on the intersection of gender issues and energy.
On April 8, Nurkyz Sarnogoeva spoke at the OSCE High-level Breakfast Meeting in Vienna. She presented CAMP Alatoo’s activities in energy efficiency and shared practical case studies on the role of women in resource management in Kyrgyzstan."In our country, especially in rural regions, when men leave for labor migration, the weight of household responsibilities falls on women's shoulders. It is they who decide every day how to heat the home and where to source fuel," Nurkyz noted in her speech. She emphasized that her work focuses on supporting women in implementing energy-efficient solutions, helping them overcome barriers such as limited access to finance, a lack of technical knowledge, and restricted opportunities for training.
The Vienna itinerary includes participation in world-class events, such as the Gender & Energy Compact Dialogue and the International Vienna Energy & Climate Forum (IVECF) at the Hofburg Palace. The tour also features a visit to the Andritz Hydro company and a technical tour of the Simmering Power Plant—one of Europe’s most eco-friendly facilities, utilizing a combination of gas, biomass, and solar energy. Additionally, participants will attend presentations on Vienna’s urban decarbonization initiatives.
The 11-month "Empowering Central Asian Women in Renewable Energy" programme aims to: (1) increase women's representation in senior management and decision-making roles in the energy sector; (2) develop leadership qualities, self-confidence, and strategic communication skills; (3)create a platform for networking and knowledge exchange among specialists from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.
Energy has traditionally remained one of the most male-dominated industries, with women holding fewer than 20% of senior management positions worldwide. This programme is designed to change this dynamic and break the stereotype that energy is an exclusively male field. The participation of Nurkyz Sarnogoeva not only strengthens the capacity of CAMP Alatoo PF but also opens new avenues for the development of clean technologies across the entire region.
