Modern cartographic technologies and digital tools for working with geospatial data are becoming essential in addressing environmental challenges, monitoring ecosystem changes, conserving biodiversity, and promoting sustainable resource management.
GIS applications help professionals manage protected areas more effectively, preserve forests, pastures, and wildlife, and foster collaboration with local communities.
CAMP Alatoo PF places strong emphasis on the professional development of its staff, providing opportunities for gaining new knowledge and practical skills.
In mid-June, the foundation’s specialists took part in the Samarkand Summer School dedicated to innovations in sustainable land use and nature conservation in Central Asia.
The training was hosted by Samarkand State University (Uzbekistan) and organized within the framework of the regional program “Integrated and Climate-Sensitive Land Use in Central Asia” (ILUCA), implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German government.
The summer school brought together 23 participants — specialists and master’s students from five Central Asian countries. The program focused on developing practical skills in GIS technologies and remote sensing methods for sustainable land and ecosystem management. Participants studied the basics of GIS, working with vector data, map design, spatial analysis, and applied Google Earth Engine (GEE) to monitor land degradation, biodiversity, and ecosystem health.
The school also created a space for exchanging knowledge with experts and practitioners from Germany, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan, who discussed real-world applications of digital tools in pasture, forest, and protected area management.
The learning process was complemented by a rich cultural program, including visits to the historic sites of Samarkand (a UNESCO World Heritage site), and excursions to Zarafshan National Nature Park and Amankutan National Park, where participants explored examples of rare species conservation and landscape restoration in practice.
