Ecologists and volunteers have created artificial islands for birds on the coast of Lake Issyk-Kul

16 April 2024

In the coastal zone of Lake Issyk-Kul, near the village of Yntymak in the Tyup district, a group of ecologists and volunteers, including students from School No. 31, conducted biotechnical activities to create artificial islands intended to become homes for waterfowl.

The idea was to create more than 20 islands on sections of the lake ranging from 0.5 to 3 meters in diameter. The artificial habitats are intended to attract migratory waterfowl and shorebirds for nesting. During high water periods, the islands will serve as protection against predators such as jackals and foxes. In the future, reeds (cattails) will be planted on the islands to provide additional habitat for birds. Reeded islands will serve as additional nesting areas for migratory birds, contributing to the preservation of their populations and diversity. This experiment aims to demonstrate how resilient the islands will be to high water levels, whether they will grow reeds, and if birds will nest on them. If successful, the creation of artificial habitats in this area will become a regular practice.

The goal of the ecological initiative was to engage students in nature conservation and increase their level of environmental education, as well as to create favorable conditions for birds and wildlife.

The event was organized and conducted by the joint efforts of the PF “CAMP Alatoo”, the ornithological community OSKG, and the local PF "Kushtar" ("Birds") as part of the project "Involvement of Local Communities in Sustainable Management and Planning of Specially Protected Natural Areas," which is implemented by the PF “CAMP Alatoo” with the support of the Sigrid Rausing Trust.
